Proposing a show for LUTG may seem like a scary task, but hopefully this guide will help you with the process and make you see it’s not actually as daunting as it might seem.
Where To Begin- 3 Small Steps
To start, anyone can propose a show. You don’t need to have been on a production team before, however, it is handy to have had experience in the behind the scenes roles. By now you should know the show you want to put on, there are some key things you’ll need to make sure before proposing it:
Make sure that the rights are available.
Make sure you have a production team – Director/Producer/Stage Manger
Make sure have the time to commit to planning, organising and running three rehearsals a week - it really adds up!
Register Your Show and Team
The next step is to send a message to the LUTG Exec via the Facebook page. On this message you need to state which show you would like to put on and who will be on the production team.
Pre-proposals Meeting
Once you have contacted the Exec, the Exec will be in touch to arrange a pre-proposal meeting. In this meeting, which is very informal, you will be asked a few questions about the show. Mainly being about suitable, any age restrictions, risky content etc. This meeting is nothing to worry about, nearly every show gets through this stage, it’s really just a formality and to check you’re not planning on spending millions of pounds on scenery..!
Proposals
The next step is proposals. This is where you will get together a presentation and deliver it to the membership in a General Meeting. Although this sounds quite scary, it’s a laid back meeting and everyone will be behind you and supportive. For this you will need to create a presentation showcasing you ideas. An example presentation can be found here:
Tablet Ready
The presentation can be as creative as you like, but it needs to have the budget displayed at the end of the presentation.
Once you have delivered your presentation, you will be asked questions by the membership; these can be anything and vary depending on show. After the questions, a discussion will take place among the membership about the show and its suitability, for this section you will be asked to leave the room.
After every show has presented, all production teams will be asked to leave the room again, and a vote will take place. Once voted, you will be asked back into the room and the successful shows will be announced.
Advice from members for proposals:
"Be calm and confident and remember that everyone is there to support you. Don’t be afraid to ask the exec any questions that you have. Keep the presentation short and concise"
So far you’ve had an overview of the proposal process, the next few parts will help with certain things like the budget, obtaining rights and claiming money back after the show.
